Abstract
The ITER Project is an exemplary case among large international research projects, because of its scientific, technological and organizational challenges to produce clean energy from fusion. Supported by the most important industrial countries, its gigantic
worksite in Cadarache has met important milestone, establishing several technological records.
During the meeting, the stakes of ITER will be presented as well as its success factors which are often relevant also in other collaborative projects on new energy sources: – collaboration networks among Countries at different levels (institutions, universities,
and industrial companies),
– mobility of highly skilled scientists/engineers,
– innovative funding strategies (e.g. public-private) tailored on projects’ type and maturity level.

Italy is the second contributor to the ITER staff and won 60% of the high-tech contracts. A dynamic and international culture in the institutions, industry, universities and professional networks together with strong technical and organizational skills are key factors for this success.
